Minister directs work on war footing in flood hit areas

Bhubaneswar, Jun 21 (UNI) Orissa Rural Development Minister B B Harichandan today directed the officials to undertake the repairing of the roads, tube wells and Pipe Water Supply scheme System on a war footing in five flood hit districts of Balasore, Bhadrakh, Mayurbhanja, Jajpur and Keonjhar.

Mr Harichandan said around 4,000 tube wells and four pipe water supply scheme were affected in the recent floods in 1475 villages covering 22 blocks in the five districts.

So far around 1.5 lakh drinking water pouches, 80,000 halogen tablets were distributed in the affected areas and the executive engineers were directed to take necessary steps for smooth supply of safe drinking water.

He said 21 mobile teams had been deployed to undertake repair and disinfect the tube wells and 24 more teams were waiting to take up disinfection of water sources in Balasore district once the water level recedes.

The Minister said 609 km of 248 different roads were damaged in the floods and efforts were on to make the roads communicable at the earliest.

Official sources here said three Airforce helicopters were engaged in dropping food packets in affected areas and the government had requested the Defence Ministry for one more helicopter to provide succor to the flood affected.

Meanwhile, the train services which was disrupted on the Khurda Balasore section, was resumed upto Jaleswar during the day. Around one hundred health camps and 42 mobile medical teams were working in the areas.

Orissa Governor M C Bhandre is scheduled to make an aerial survey of the flood affected areas tomorrow.
