1975 political jail inmates conference on June 26
Varanasi, Jun 21: Politicians, who were booked under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and Defence of India Rules (DIR) during the 1975 Emergency called by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will hold a first ever national conference on June 26 in the national capital.
Former Union Minister George Fernandes would preside over the meeting, whereas Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav would inaugurate it.
All the politicians of various parties, who went to jail during the Emergency, have been invited to the conference, meeting organising secretary Vijay Narayan said.
About 2,000 politicians from all over the country have given their nod to attend the meeting, he added.
The Bihar and Chhattisgarh governments were giving Rs 5,000 per month to the politicians, who were imprisoned under the MISA and DIR during Indira Gandhi's rule.
Though the Mulayam Singh government in UP was making the payment, the Mayawati government had stayed it.
