Pune, June 20 (UNI) Famous former Olympians from various disciplines of sports will take a dive into the memory lane, as they take part in a week-long sporting extravaganza, being hosted by the Maharashtra Olympic Association (MOA) in Pune from June 23 to 29.
In keeping with the guidelines, issued by the world body the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has directed all the affiliated State Olympic Associations to celebrate the week by holding competitions, seminars on sports, sports medicine and other related cultural events in a befitting manner during the week.
MOA Secretary General Prof Balasaheb Landge, while briefing sports scribes here today, said that in the past, June 29 was being observed as the Olympic Day, but since this year onwards the whole week has been devoted to celebrate the week, in a bid to create the much needed awakening among the masses of the Olympic movement, the world over.
Some of the icons, who have brought glory to the country like hockey wizard Dhanraj Pillay, Vikram Pilla, ace sprinter Adille Sumariwalla and Balkrishna Akotkar, pugilists Manoj Pingale, Gopal Devang, ace paddler Kamlesh Mehta, famed grappler Ganpat Andalkar and former womens' hockey captain Rekha Bhide (Mundphan), will participate in the events, among others, Mr Landge pointed out.
Former Olympian and Arjuna awardee Ganpat Andalkar will formally inaugurate the week, at a function to be held at the S M Joshi Sabhagrah on June 23.
The closing ceremony, to be held at Ganesh Kala Krida Munch of the Nehru stadium, will witness the felicitations of the former Olympians.
