Medallists of Commonwealth Karate championships felicitated

Mumbai, Jun 19 (UNI) The seven Indian medallists of the fourth Commonwealth Karate Championship held in Edinburgh, including gold winners Anirudh Sakpal and Seeta Salgia Patel, were felicitated here by the All India Karate Federation.

The medallists were honoured in the presence of chief guest and Mumbai Commissioner of Police, Hasan Gafoor, at the Cricket Club of India, yesterday.

''This is the first time India has won medals (two gold and five bronze) in 30 years of AIKF's participation in international meets and this is a red letter day for karate in the country,'' Sensei Vispy Kapadia, the Vice President of the Federation and chief coach of the team said.

Sixteen Indian karatekas took part in the championship in which over 1,800 competitors took part, including more than 300 each from Britain and South Africa.
