Greenpeace protest highlights GM Food risks
New Delhi, Jun 19 (UNI) In a unique protest against Genetically Modified Food, Greenpeace activists today piled up illegal chips packets in front of the Health Ministry to remind Health Minister Ramadoss about the risks of GM Food.
Unfulrling a banner declaring ''Dr Anbumani Ramadoss we do not want GM food'', Greenpeace activists handcuffed themselves in front of gate number 5 of Nirman Bhawan demanding an immediate action from the Health Minister to stop the influx of illegal Pepsico's Doritos corn chips that are widely sold in India.
Last week too, the Greenpeace had revealed that these chips contain genetically modified ingredients.
''There is no doubt that presence of such genetically modified food products is a threat to public health and safety. It has been confirmed that Doritos contains MON863 variety of corn which had caused liver and kidney toxicity on rats,''. ''Rajesh Krishnan of the Greenpeace India said.
The Greenpeace demandined that the Health Minister take an active position on the issue of safety of GM Foods and ensure that these products are confiscated from the market without any delay.
