Washington, June 19: British singer George Michael is thrilled that same-sex marriage were made legal in California on June 17. The singer, who kicked off his first North American tour in 17 years on the same day, says he was that the move was 'way overdue'.

"It's way overdue. It's something that happened... almost without a whisper in England," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying. "Because this is a much more religious society, there are a huge number of people who want unions to be part of something that they can place in their religion," he added. Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples across the US state tied the know on Tuesday, June 17, after state legislators overturned a ban last month (May08). California is only the second state in the U.S., after Massachusetts, to legalise gay marriage.
