Congress wrests MLC seat from TRS
Hyderabad, June 19 (UNI) The ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh scored another victory when its nominee, Peer Shabbir Ahmed, was today declared elected to the MLC seat vacated by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).
Mr Ahamad, the State Haj Committee Chairman was the lone candidate to file nomination for the MLC seat.
With the party losing nine of the 16 sitting MLAs in the recent byelections, the TRS decided not not to field its candidate to the seat which fell vacant following the resignation of Mr H A Rahman.
The TRS had four of its sitting MPs, 16 MLAs and three MLC resigning in protest against the delay in grant of statehood to Telangana by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre. This forced the byelections in which the Congress and the opposition TDP gained.
