Hall named after 'war' hero in Karnataka
Bangalore, Jun 18: A 'Testing Hall' at the Selection Centre (South) here was named after Ashok Chakra Awardee and former Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, who was killed while fighting insurgents in Jammu and Kashmir on July 31, 2007, while commanding IX Maratha Light Infantry deployed on the Line of Control (LoC) in the rugged Uri Sector.
Col Venugopal got Ashok Chakra posthumously for his bravery, courage and resolute leadership in eliminating a group of eight terrorists before being shot, a Defence release said here.
His wife Vasanthi unveiled and dedicated the 50-year-old hall to the memory of her husband, in the presence of his parents.
Major General P K Chakravorty, Commandant, Selection Centre (South), felt the local war hero should be honoured and given a befitting place of pride in the Selection Centre, hence the decision to name the hall after him was made.
