Delhi boys beat J-K on way to quarters

Kapurthala, Jun 18 (UNI) The boys teams of hosts Puinjab, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jharkhand and the girls squads of Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh qualified for quarter-finals of the 35th Sub-Junior National Basketball Championship being held at the Sainik School courts here.

The remainng positions will be determined by the winners of the pre-quuarter-final matches. In the evening sessions today, Karnataka will take on Maharastra, Manipur will clash with Chattisgarh, Kerala will face UP in the boys pre-quarter finals.

In the girls section, Haryana will play West Bangal, Jharkhand will meet Delhi and Maharastra will lock horns with hosts Punjab in the pre-quarter finals.

In the pre-quarter final match played this morning, the Delhi boys defeated Jammu and Kashmir by 36-09. Delhi were leading at the end of first quarter by 13-2. At the end of second quarter Delhi were ahead by 21-6.

The winners increased the lead after third quarter to 29-9. For Delhi, Narinder (7), Hemant (6), Pankaj (5), Surinder (4) and Amar (6) were the main scorers. J&K reduced the margin through Shubam (3), Shubam Jr (2), Divanshu (2) and Vikrant (2).

In the girls section pre-quarter final match Tamil Nadu defeated Gujarat by 32-14 points, after taking a lead of 11-4 points at the end of first quarter. The Gujarat girls did not score a single point in the second quarter.

At the end of second quarter Tamil Nadu were leading by 21-4 and in the third quarter Gujarat playing tight defense did not allow Tamil Nadu to score a single point and scored nine points for themselves. The score remained 21-13 in favour of Tamil Nadu at the end of third quarter.

For Tamil Nadu, Shiny Prasanna topscored with 12 points. Keerthi and Staya contributed four points each. For Gujarat, Shivani (8) and Shivanku (4) were main scorers.

Results: Boys: Pool B: Jharkhand bt Haryana 46-35. Pool D: Kerala bt Madhya Pradesh 52-47, Tamil Nadu bt Chandigarh 47-28. Pool E: UP bt A.P 44-11, Maharastra bt Orissa 54-33. Pool F: Delhi bt Manipur 55-27, West Bengal bt Mizoram 41-31.

Girls: Pool A: Chattisgarh bt HP 57-32.
