Meghalaya govt to set up foreign languages university
Shillong, June 17 (UNI) The Meghalaya government is considering setting up a separate university for English and other foreign languages in Garo Hills district shortly.
Speaking at a felicitation ceremony at Tura in Garo Hills district yesterday, state Higher and Technical Education Minister Manas Chaudhury said a new university for English and Foreign languages would be set up here shortly to improve the students' proficiency in foreign languages.
Mr Chaudhury said the state government was committed to improve the economic conditions of teachers - the backbone of the society.
He also said the present government was keen to improve the education system of the state, adding that education policy would be finalised very soon.
''The state government has tied up with the North Eastern council (NEC) to train teachers in a bid to improve the quality of education,'' the minister stated.
Mr Chaudhury would be a part of the delegation of state Education Ministers to meet Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh in New Delhi on July 2 where discussions pertaining to revamping the education scenario in the states would be discussed.
