Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 17: As many as 30 pro-Congress Kerala Students Union (KSU), Youth Congress workers and five police personnel were injured when the KSU-Youth Congress march turned violent here today.

As the police failed to control the agitating workers after they pelted stones, police used water cannon and lobbed tear gas shells to disburse them.

Though heavy police force was posted at important gates of the State Secretariate to prevent their entry, the protesters marched forward and jumped over the compound, forcing the policemen to resort to lathicharge. In retaliation, the workers pelted stones at the police.

Police have arrested more than 50 workers.

The agitators were demanding withdrawal of social studies text book in the seventh standard and implementation of government prescribed fees in 50 per cent merit seats in the Self Finance professinal colleges.
