Siliguri, Jun 16 (UNI) Works of the Rs 900 crore Ramvi hydel power project, being executed by the National Hydel Power Corporation in Kalimpong, were today suspended after miscreants attacked labour colony last night, police said.

Additional SP, Kalimpong, K B Dorjee said some unidentified miscreants raided the labour colony at Ramvi and beat the inhabitants and in the process some casual labourers were injured.

One of the injured Amit Tirkey was brought here and admitted to a nursing home with critical wounds on his neck. He was attcked by a kukri, Mr Dorjee said.

Mr Dorjee said the attack was not politically motivated.

But the incident had created panic among the casual migrant workers, who today refused to join the work for the Rs 70 crore unit power project, scheduled to be completed by 2010.

NHPC engineer S Khathua said they were facing huge risk as often the miscreants attack the workers, especially in the nights taking advantage of dark and isolation of the area.

He said he was unsure when the work will resume as most of the workers under contract labour left the site for unknown destination in panic.
