Colombo, Jun 16: At least ten people were killed and several others injured in a suicide blast in Sri Lanka's northern town of Vavuniya. The suicide bomber came riding a motorbike and reportedly blasted himself in front of a police office in the town, police said. The injured have been admitted to a near by hospital.
Soon after the attack, the area has been sealed off by the security forces. The officials said that there are many school children among the injured. Initial reports says that the blast occurred at around 7.10 am (local time), targeting the police personnel leaving the SSP office for their duties. The SSP was not at the building at the time of the blast.
Officials blamed the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for the attack. 19 police personnel and four civilians were injured and admitted to the general hospital at Vavuniya, hospital sources said. A school-girl was also among the injured. Vavuniya borders the rebel-held territory in the restive north, which has witnessed intense battle between the Tamil Tigers and Sri Lankan security forces in recent months.
