New Delhi, Jun 16 (UNI) Former Rajya Sabha member Prema Cariappa today assumed the charge of chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board, bringing to the office her enormous experience in public life.
Ms Cariappa, who held important positions in both politics and administration, was chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Bangalore City Corporation, and Mayor of Bangalore.
She was elected to the Rajya Sabha for a six-year term in April 2002.
On assuming the charge of the Board, she said she would try to expand the activities of the organisation and fulfill the dreams of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Dr Durgabai Deshmukh.
''I will also work wholeheartedly for the welfare and development of women and children,'' she added.
Ms Cariappa has worked extensively for the welfare and uplift of poor families, widows and the destitutes.
