Wellington, June 16 : Late actor Heath Ledger based his portrayal of Batman villain The Joker on Johnny Rotten, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols.
The news comes from Chris Nolan, who penned and directed the new movie 'The Dark Knight'.
Nolan told Sci Fi Wire online news service that Johnny Rotten, real name John Lydon, was Ledger's inspiration for the character, reports stuff.co.nz.
"We very much took the view in looking at the character of The Joker that what's strong about him is this idea of anarchy," Noland said.
"We wanted to show the pure anarchy of someone who wants to do harm purely for its own sake."
The new Batman movie opens in Australia on July 17.
