Kendrapada, Jun 15 (UNI) Defying a ban imposed by Orissa High Court and wide-spread protest by the animal lovers, nearly 40 goats were sacrificed at the altar of Sakti cult of Ramachandi to mark the Raja Sankranti today.
The age-old rituals of sacrificing animal before the deity took place in presence of police deployed at Srirampur village under Pattamundai police station. Police deployment was to prevent sacrifying of animal.
The god-fearing people have a strong faith that the Goddess would protect them from all sorts of problem coming in their way if animals were sacrificed on the raja sankrati day.
Wildlife activists said, though the district administration was very much aware of the event, they preferred to remain silent because of sensitivity of the time and place.
Sacrificing goats is a tradition in Ramachandi pitha on the day of Raja Sakranti with participation of devotees from all parts of Kendrapara district.
