New city police commissioner cracks down on rowdies
Chennai, Jun 15 (UNI) In his first major drive after assuming office, special teams headed by Chennai City Police Commissioner R Sekar arrested more than 1,500 people, including rowdies in a storming operation carried out across the city last night.
The operation was aimed at preventing rowdyism and reducing the crime graph.
An official release here said that last night alone 1,536 people were arrested on preventive grounds by 437 patrol beats formed under the orders of Mr Sekar and supervised by Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, Additional Commissioners, Inspectors and sub-inspectors.
Those arrested included 129 rowdies, 171 history sheeters and 86 people against whom arrest warrants were pending.
Police also booked 321 cases on charges of drunken driving and against 259 persons for riding two-wheelers without wearing helmet. 254 were booked for rash driving, the release added.
This was the first major operation carried out by the police after Mr Sekar took charge as the new Commissioner of Chennai city on May 31.
