Vijayawada, Jun 14 (UNI) The City Police today arrested two persons on the charge of robbing silver bars, articles and cash valued at Rs 22 lakh from two jwellery merchants.
Addressing a press conference here, City Commissioner of Police K V Rajendranath Reddy said one K Krishna, who runs a jewellery shop at Jaggayyapeta in Krishna district, handed over 48 kg silver bars, and Rs 1.30 lakh in cash to two jewellery merchants-- P Anand and D Sandil of Salem on June 9 for preparing new silver articles.
They later left for Vijayawada by bus to board a train to Salem.
Meanwhile, Krishna contacted G Veerabhadram of Vijayawada, who is working in his shop, and requested him to help the merchants.
On arrival, the merchants rang up Veerabhadram, who assured them that he would come to meet them.
Meanwhile, one P Anand Rao, an associate of Veerabhadram, approached the merchants and convinced them that he was a police officer. He took Anand in his two-wheeler, collected the valuables and cash from him and fled the scene.
The merchants informed the matter to Krishna, who lodged a complaint with the police. The police spotted Veerabhadram and Rao at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station here and recovered the stolen articles and cash from them.
Veerabhadram confessed during interrogation that he had hatched the plan to rob the articles.
