Chennai, June 14 : Film enthusiasts rejoiced as the much-awaited Tamil film 'Dasavathaaram' starring superstar Kamal Hassan released to packed houses.

Kamal's fans thronged the theatres and celebrated the release of the film by reverently pouring milk on his cutouts and posters and offering 'aarti'.

The film is Kamal's most ambitious project so far and it is receiving a huge response at the box office.

Movie buffs claimed that the movie was going to be the mega hit of the year.

"The ten characters were so different. The lifetime cinema industry didn't see these types of characters. Kamal Hassan has done a best job," said Kannika, one of the fans.

Kamal Hassan mania seems to have gripped the fans as most of the theatres are running house full.

"The film is excellent and has been filmed perfectly. It's not a Tamil film, not an Indian film, it's a Hollywood film," said Vikram, another fan.

'Dasavathaaram', made on a whopping budget of Rs.1.3 billion, was released after a long legal battle.

The apex court recently paved the way for the film's release, having dismissed a plea by a Hindu sect that it would hurt the religious sentiments of some.

K.S. Ravikumar has directed the movie that has been in the making for the last two years.

The film is Kamal Hassan's most ambitious project so far. Besides acting in the film, he also wrote the story, screenplay and the dialogues.

The film sees Kamal Hassan don ten different roles from a Vaishnav priest to President George Bush and also stars actress Mallika Sherawat.

Bollywood composer-turned-actor Himesh Reshammiya has scored the music for the film, his first ever for a Tamil production.

In April, Hollywood action superstar Jackie Chan was especially flown to India for the film's music release.
