Shillong, Jun 14 (UNI) The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) today urged the Meghalaya government to refrain from taking any premature and unwarranted approach to solve the issue of uranium mining as it might prove to be detrimental to the ecology and environment of the state.

The HSPDP, an ally of the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government, urged Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy to work out modalities to find an amicable solution to the issue at stake for the benefit of the generations to come rather than holding lectures, seminars, and discussions on uranium mining in the schools and colleges.

The deliberate attempt by the government to elicit knowledge about uranium through introduction of text book, holding lectures, seminars, discussions and other means in schools and colleges in the state was considered a dangerous proposition on the part of the government to allow to continue, the party statement said.

''Apparently, the hidden agenda is purported as an attempt to convince the student community that uranium mining, if allowed to take place in the state, will not in any way cause hazards or endanger human existence as it is made out to be, since the effects of radiation and otherwise emanating out when it is mined are minimal and hence negligible, '' it pointed out.

Further, it stated that foolproof expert and scientific opinion was yet to be obtained of the dangers and hazards that uranium might cause, including the protective and safety measures to the people in case calamities occur in the event of uranium mining in the state.
