2 held for selling fake gold coins

Chennai, Jun 14 (UNI) Police today arrested two people and seized nearly ten kg of fake gold coins and chains which they tried to sell to a textile shop owner in North Chennai.

Police said the duo, Gowribai (65) of Maharashtra and Kishore (25) of Gujarat in disguise as mother and son were arrested when they tried to sell the fake coins.

The duo approached the owner of the shop, Sunil yesterday stating that they had found a treasure of gold valued at Rs 1.50 crore while working at a construction site and wanted to sell it off for Rs 50 lakh.

Sunil agreed to purchase the entire treasure and asked them to come to the shop today. However, he grew suspicious and alerted the police, who arrested the duo when they came to meet Sunil today.

Later, it was found that the gold plated coins were only brass coins.

Both were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
