Nashik, Jun 13: As many as five policemen have been suspended here, for their involvement in a theft case dealing with fraud of valuables.
Senior PI Babasaheb Budhwant, constable Rajendra Nagarkar, Kailas Thete, Vitthal Mali and Tatya Wagh, all from Ambad police station of the Commissionerate, have been suspended, Police Commissioner Himanshu Roy informed in a press conference late last night.
No action was taken against another accused constable Jadhav, due to lack of evidence, Mr Roy said.
On May 15, a parcel containing gold, diamonds and some ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh, belonging to a jeweller Satish Takle, was stolen from a truck at Vilholi Naka, under jurisdiction of Ambad police station. Mr Takle's request these police personnel investigated the matter without registering a case.
They also took into custody five people -- Tahir Sayyad, Azhar Khan, Ankush alias Aba Bharte, Ulhas Belekar, Amjad Sayyad and also recovered the stolen goods.
The accused were kept at a private place instead of the police station and later released, by the police personnel. These police personnel then registered a complaint that goods worth Rs 10 lakh had been stolen and recovered, and did not mentioned about the other goods recovered.
Following this, Mr Takle took the matter to the city Police Commissioner and an inquiry was ordered, which led to suspension of five policemen late last night.
Meanwhile, the five accused arrested in the case earlier, have been arrested by the police and a hunt for one more accused, Sameer Tamboli has been launched.
