TN to become child labour-free by 2010: Govt

Chennai, Jun 12 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today resolved to make the State child labour-free by 2010.

The Government had initiated steps to abolish child labour and by 2010, the State would become child labour-free, an official release said on the occasion of World Anti-Child Labour day today.

To begin with, steps have been taken to declare panchayats, townships, municipalities and corporation wards as child labour- free, it said.

At a meeting organised on the occasion, Labour Minister T M Anbarasan distributed awards to local bodies, which worked for the abolition of child labour in their regions.

Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan distributed best teachers awards to those working in special schools, started to rehabilitate children engaged in child labour.

Chennai Mayor M Subramanian distributed prizes to high and higher secondary students who studied in the special schools and scored good marks.

A Kanniyakumari report said a procession was taken out by the employees of the Labour Department, students and teachers from Anna stadium to the Collectorate in Nagercoil, to do away with child labourers.
