Outokumpu introduces stainless steel reinforcing bars
New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) Eyeing the country's growing infrastructure sector, Finnish stainless steel major Outokumpu has unveiled its corrosion resistant Duplex stainless steel reinforcing bars.
''The Duplex stainless steel reinforcing bars have been introduced in the Indian market for providing long life into concrete structures especially in the coastal areas, ports, airports, bridges, high rise buildings and water treatment plants as these bars do not corrode and thus concrete failure due to spalling is avoided,'' company Country head YPS Suri said in a statement.
Although Duplex Stainless steel reinforcing bars are expensive, it can be used selectively in failure prone zones.
The other benefits of stainless steel reinforcement include increase in durability, reduction in repair and maintenance costs, and elimination of concrete sealants among others.
Over the last three decades, premature deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has become a serious problem worldwide due to corrosion of the embedded steel. The estimated cost of repair is in excess of 550 billion dollars, Mr Suri said.
