Counselling begins for engineering seats in SRM varsity
Chennai, Jun 12 (UNI) Counselling for filling up 1750 seats in the SRM University here, for various engineering courses, spread over 21 branches, began today.
The top three students on the merit list in the SRM Engineering Entrance Examinations, hailed from Northern India, one of them, surprisingly, opting for Food Processing.
SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu and Vice-Chancellor P Sathyanarayanan said Alok Rajan of Bihar topped the merit list, while Amar Prakash from Uttar Pradesh finished second.
A candidate from Madhya Pradesh finished third. While Alok and the Madhya Pradesh student opted for Bio-tech, which was the most preferred subject for north Indian students, Amar opted for Food Processing.
''Several students from north are opting for bio-technology and bio-informatics, whereas their counterparts in south opt for ECE, Computer Science and IT'', Prof Sathyanarayanan said.
He said with the addition of 150 seats this year due to introduction of B.Tech couses in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Information and Telecommunications, in all 2100 seats were on offer, of which 80 per cent (1750 seats) would be filled through counselling based on the merit list.
The remaining 20 per cent of seats (350) would be filled through management quota.
