TN medicos boycott classes

Chennai, June 10 (UNI) More than 1,500 medicos of Government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu today boycotted classes, condemning yesterday's police lathicharge on medicos here.

Apart from students of the Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical college and Kilpauk Medical college in the city, their counterparts in Thanjavur, Salem, Tirunelveli and K A P Viswanathan Government Medical College in Tiruchirapalli also abstained from classes.

The students also staged demonstrations in front of the college premises, demanding action against the police personnel involved in the lathicharge.

More than 150 students were lathicharged yesterday after they resorted to a road blockade against the Directorate of Medical Education's decision to reserve 50 per cent of the seats to in-service candidates during counselling to PG admissions.

Meanwhile, members of the Tiruchirapalli unit of the Tamil Nadu Doctors' Association, sporting black badges, condemned the police lathicharge on students.

More than 250 medicos of Government Medical College in Madurai, wearing black badges, staged a demonstration in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital, but later attended classes.

Students of the first and second year MBBS course in Theni Government Medical College attended classes, sporting black badges.
