Mangalore, Jun 10 (UNI) The New Mangalore Port has achieved a record in handling of containers when M V Tiger Stream, container feeder line of M/s Bengal Tiger Lines operating between Mangalore and Colombo called at the Port on June Six.

Mr Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), in a release here today, said that a record number of 1186 TEUs per voyage handled from the vessel surpassing the earlier record of 786 TEUs handled from the vessel M V TIGER POWER called at the Port on September 9 in 2006. This is the highest number of containers ever handled at the Port in a single voyage, he said.

Out of 1186 TEUs, 483 TEUs are import containers with raw cashew and 702 export containers stuffed with reefer, coffee, granite blocks, fish meal, cashew kernels, and machinery. The vessel which was directly called at the Port from Colombo sailed back after the operation at the Port. The container traffic at the Port is showing upward growth during the beginning of the current financial year 2008-09 by handling 5556 TEUS as on today as against 3097 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of last year with a growth rate of 79.40 per cent, he said.

Meanwhile, Mr P Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT had attributed the growth of container traffic at NMPT to the pro-active marketing efforts made by the Port and the infrastructure created for the smooth handling of containers coupled with commencement of new main line vessels from East Africa and West Africa.
