Tiruchirapalli, Jun 10 (UNI) A section of students of the K A P Viswanathan Government Medical College today abstained from attending their classes in protest against the police lathicharge on students at Chennai.
The students were lathicharged by the police when they staged a protest in front of the office of Directorate of Medical Education (DME) in Chennai yesterday.
A group of students, who came to the Directorate to attend counselling for PG admissions, protested the DME's decision to reserve 50 per cent of the seats to in-service candidates.
The students later squatted on the road leading to traffic disruption. Police rushed to the spot and lathicharged to disperse them.
The protesting students of KAP Viswanathan Medical College urged the state government to take action against the erring police personnel.
Meanwhile, members of the Tiruchirapalli district unit of the Tamil Nadu Doctors' Association, working in various government and primary health centres in the district, sporting black badges condemned the police lathicharge on students.
In Madurai, more than 250 medicos of Government Medical College, wearing black badges staged a demonstration in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) to condemn the lathicarge incident.
After the stir, the protesters attended their classes.
A section of GRH doctors also wore black badges to register their protest against the police action.
Students of the first and second year MBBS course in Theni Government Medical College, attended their classes sporting black badges.
Similar demonstration was held in front of the Tirunelveli Medical College, a report from Madurai said.
