K'taka Govt orders inquiry into police firing on farmers

Bangalore, June 10 (UNI) The Karnataka Government today ordered an inquiry into the police firing on agitating farmers, in which one person was killed and four others were injured in Haveri town.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa directed Belgaum Regional Commissioner Amita Prasad to inquire into the incident and submit a report within ten days.

He announced a solatium of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those who sustained minor injuries in the firing.

''I appeal to the farmers to maintain calm as the Government is making all out efforts to ensure sufficient supply of fertilisers and seeds on a war footing,'' Mr Yeddyurappa said.

To a question, he alleged that the violent incident was instigated by elements which had hatched a conspiracy against the BJP Government.
