New Delhi, Jun 10 (UNI) A delegation of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leaders led by party supremo Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with the Election Commissioners (EC) here today and urged them to take complete control of election affairs in West Bengal as a special case.
Later, while addressing mediapersons Ms Banerjee said the CPI(M)-led Left Front Government in West Bengal is in power for the last 32 years by cheating the people by deleting the names of lakhs of genuine voters from the Electoral Rolls (ERs) and with inserting names of lakhs bogus voters.
She said time and again various political parties and individuals in India and in the US have expressed the fear that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) could be tampered with and the same fear was expressed by an independent expert committee set up by the Election Commission in 2004 which submitted its report in 2006.
In order to eliminate these problems the Commission should revert back to the system of ballot papers, she said and added that the same is possible because the EC empowered the State Governments for the maintenance of these EVMs.
In the case of other States the scenario is not same as in West Bengal. In other states the power rotates among various political parties. It is only in West Bengal that the Left Front is ruling the State at a stretch for 32 years but still the Human Index of the people of the State was in a pathetic conditions, Ms Banerjee said.
The AITC supremo said the ruling Government was tampering with the programming of EVMs and mixing their own voting machines with them in the name of maintaining the same as a result of which the Commission could never be able to provide free and fair elections to the people of the state.
Ms Banerjee also alleged that while making the ERs the ruling Left Front0 Government plays the same tricks as the task of preparing the ERs is carried out by the State Government officials who are " red card" holders.
She said in view of such conditions, the EC should take up these two important jobs related to elections in its own hands to eliminate the chances of any foul play and at the same time give a strong message that it wants to hold free and fair electons in the State.
The party has prayed to the EC that as a special case, it should take this responsibility on itself for upholding the fairness of the elections in West Bengal, she added.
