Chandigarh, Jun 9 (UNI) A delegation of Congress MLA's and office bearers led by the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress (PPCC) Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today submitted a memorandum to Governor Gen (retd) S F Rodrigues demanding reduction in sales tax on petrol, deisel and LPG on the pattern of Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
The Congress leaders regretted the statement of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal expressing his inability to reduce the sales tax in Punjab. They said this has exposed the true face of Akali Government which was claiming to be champion of the farmers and the common man.
The Congress leaders asserted that the Akali leaders were shedding crocodile tears for the farmers as the government was not ready to reduce sale tax on diesl. They requested the Governor to use his good office for getting the taxes reduced.
The Congress leaders also said the Punjab Government had failed to understand the realities of the impact of globalisation and the global increase in petro prices.
Ms Bhattal warned that if the state Government did not reduce the sale tax/VAT on petrol, diesel and LPG, the Congress will be compelled to take to the streets to raise the voice of the common man.
The delegation comprised former Pradesh Congress President Shamsher Singh Dullo and MLAs Avtar Singh Brar, Tej Parkash Singh, Lal Singh and Balbir Singh Sidhu besides senior leaders Harnam Dass Johar, Bir Devinder Singh, Naseeb Singh Gill, Harbans Lal, Gurbinder Singh Atwal, Gopal Krishan Chatrath, C D Singh Kamboj and R R Bhardwaj.
