Gangtok, Jun 9 (UNI) Sikkim education minister G M Gurung today tabled a bill in the Assembly to establish Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University (VMSU), a private university, in the state.
Thirumuruga Kirupanada Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal medical education and charitable trust, Tamil Nadu, had approached the state government to make an Act for establishment of a self financed private university in Sikkim to be called Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University.
The entire funding of estimated investment of Rs 25 crores over the next 5 years will be borne by the Tamil Nadu trust itself and has not sought any financial help from the state government for establishing and operating the university, said Gurung while introducing the Bill.
The trust has established more than 27 professional institutions in medical, management and engineering fields in the past 25 years, said Gurung.
Gurung also tabled a Bill today in the House to bind all private educational institutions to reserve at least 20 per cent of its total seats to be filled by local students whose parents possess Sikkim Subject Certificate or Certificate of Identification.
There are several private educational institutions coming up in the state for which the state government has deemed it expedient to enact a legislation for reservation of at least 20 percent seats in those private educational institutions for local students, said Gurung while introducing the Sikkim Reservation of Seats in Private Educational Institution Bill.
