Islamabad, June 6 : Pakistan President Musharraf is an elected president of the country and the demand by an 'Ex-servicemen Society' for his court martial and impeachment is "unrealistic", the country's Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar has said.

The minister said the organisation should have criticised the president when they were in service or "when they were given jobs by Musharraf" after retirement.

"At that time they used to sing songs of his praise. Now they have turned against him," the Daily Times quoted as saying.

He said that Pakistan's progress and prosperity was the government's priority and "we are moving ahead very carefully".

Mukhtar further said that he did not understand why former army officers had made such statements at the time when the country needed economic and political stability. "We contested elections under him, there is no reason that I should say I do not accept him as president."
