Gorakhpur, Jun 6 (UNI) Expressing concern over the dimnishing ground water level, Narmada Bachao Andolan activist Medha Patkar today said it was happening due to the over exploitation of natural resources by the government and some selfish elements.
Talking to mediapersons here, Ms Patkar said '' The government is allowing use of underground water just at Rs 0.05 per litre, while the same was being sold in the market at Rs 10 per litre.'' ''Bottling plants should be set up to check the falling ground water level,'' she observed.
''About 60 to 70 per cent of the fertile land has been used for irrigation due to one or the other reason,'' the social worker claimed.
Therefore, the government should also invest natural resources, while framing any development policy, Ms Patkar added.
''Some foreign companies were harming our fertile lands by misusing ground water level...people should come forward and save ponds and wells as they are vital for irrigation purpose.'' UNI JAS ATI UCS2040
