Mumbai, Jun 6 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir has condemned yesterday's attack on the Thane residence of ''Loksatta'' editor-in-chief Kumar Ketkar and urged Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to take steps to prevent further attacks on members of media.
The Governor, in a letter to Dr Ketkar a copy of which was sent to Chief Minsiter Vilasrao Deshmukh, said, ''I was shocked to read reports about a group of politically-charged hoodlums attacking your residence in Thane on June 5.'' ''Even more appalling was to know that this was an expression of displeasure over the views expressed by you in your editorial in the Loksatta,'' the Governor said.
Maharashtra is one of the most progressive states in the country, known for its lofty tradition of upholding freedom of speech and expression, the Governor said, adding the incident, regrettably not an isolated one, is certainly a blot on the fair image of the state.
''I condemn it in the strongest possible words,'' he added.
