New Delhi, Jun 6 (UNI) Delhi BJP workers today staged a demonstration demanding withdrawal of recent hiked prices of petroleum products, including cooking gas, and curbing spiralling inflation.
Several party workers courted arrest during the demonstration and were released later.
Addressing the protestors, Pradesh President Harshvardhan said the Congress is imposing an economic emergency in the country.
''It has tried to snatch bread from the common man. The effect of the increase in the prices of petrol, cooking gas and diesel is showing now. The rate of inflation has gone up to 8.24 per cent which may go up to 20 per cent,'' he said.
He said the President should dismiss the anti-people UPA government besides clamping President's rule.
Dr Harshvardhan said the UPA increased petroleum prices after getting a go ahead from Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the Left.
''Now they are coming out on streets and shedding crocodile tears and are advising the states to reduce taxes. The Central government recovers 57 per cent as taxes on gas and oil. If these taxes are reduced to half then the prices of these items shall come down,'' he claimed.
He announced that the BJP will launch a movement in the entire national capital in protest against this price spiral.
Terming the subsidy of Rs 40 on cooking gas by the Sheila Dikshit government as a betrayal of the public, Dr Harshvardhan said the move will have negative impact on development of Delhi.
''The money which should have been spent for development of Delhi is being wasted for gaining popularity for electoral gains,'' he added.
