Aulakh becomes commission chairman of world soil science body
Ludhiana, Jun 6 (UNI) Punjab Agricultural University Additional Director of Research Dr Milkha Singh Aulakh has been elected as Chairperson of 'Soil and Environment Commission' of International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), with its headquarter in University of Reading, UK.
Dr Aulakh was nominated by Indian Society of Soil Science. More than 30,000 soil scientists across the globe vote to elect its office bearers once in four years based on the scientific contribution and future vision of the nominees.
Dr Aulakh, a Fulbright scholar, has focused his research on nutrient transformations and losses in soils, carbon sequestration and the environmental impacts of fertilizers. His findings led to quantification and evaluation of the effect of crop management practices on leaching of nutrients and emissions of greenhouse gases from agricultural soils.
He has developed economically viable and eco-friendly technologies by the integrated use of mineral fertilizers and on-farm available natural resources (crop residues, green manures, farm manures, press-mud, etc) with pulses and legume oilseeds in cropping sequences.
Dr Aulakh has been Visiting Scientist with USDA Agricultural Research Service; Project Scientist at International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines; and Collaborating Scientist at Frounhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research and University of Freiburg, Germany.
