Post offices to make wage payments in NREGS
Bhubaneswar, Jun 5 (UNI) The Orissa Panchayati Raj department today signed an MoU with the Orissa Postal circle to make payments to wage earners under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme(NREGS) through post offices across the state.
The MoU was signed to ensure transparency in the wage payment and enable the wage earners to get their wages in time.
The system would also inculcate a habit of thrift and facilitate empowerment of the socially and economically backward people in the rural areas.
Panchayati Raj Commissioner-cum-Secretary R N Das and Orissa Circle Chief Post Master General Ashok Das signed the MoU in presence of Panchayati Raj Minister R N Mohanty at a function here.
As per the agreement the state government would deposit the amount payable to the wage earners under the NREGS at the Head Post offices.
The amount would be credited to the savings bank accounts of the wage earners by the post offices for disbursement.
The wage earners receiving payment through post offices would be covered under accidental death insurance of Rs one lakh at a nominal premium of Rs 15 per annum.
A person would be entitled to get the insurance cover if he or she died in road or train accident,fire, lightning, drowning, snake bite, natural calamity or by wildlife attack.
An agreement was made between the Postal Circle and the Oriental Insurance company for the purpose.
