The researchers at Melbourne University found applying oestrogen cream to the male private part thickened the foreskin and provided a natural barrier to the spread of infection.

Prof Roger Short said the treatment could become an easy and cost-effective way to contain the spread of the AIDS virus. ''By applying oestrogen, you create a natural condom, a membrane that the virus can't get through,'' the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted him as saying.
