Shillong, Jun 4 (UNI) Leaders of the Garo tribes have submitted a memorandum to Meghalaya Governor S S Sidhu, seeking his intervention on various urgent development issues in the Garo Hills district.

In the memorandum to the Governor during his visit to the district yesterday, the Garo leaders demanded improvement of the National Highways, setting up of a seperate university and early completion of the work of the Baljek Airport in the district, among others.

The Governor reportedly gave a patient hearing to the issues and assured the local leaders that their demands would be examined and taken up with the state government.

Dr Sidhu informed the delegation that the airport would be functional soon, as there had been a move from the North Eastern Council (NEC) to have a dedicated airline serving the Northeastern region.

Regarding setting up of a new university in the district, the Governor said it would require more time, but assured that he would take up the issue of expansion and upgradation of the North Eastern Hill University campus at Tura district.

About the demand for a Raj Bhavan Guest House at Tura, Dr Sidhu stated that he had given approval for the site and building plans for the same and the PWD was expected to take up the construction work soon.
