Chandigarh, Jun 3 (UNI) Haryana Governor Dr AR Kidwai today presented state's highest sports honour, 'Bhim Award' to boxer Vijender of Bhiwani, shooter Manoj Kumar of district Rohtak, athlete Bhupinder Singh of district Faridabad, hockey player Jyodeep Kaur of Shahbad, wrestler Meena Devi of district Bhiwani and physically challenged Girraj Singh of district Faridabad.
Each recipient of 'Bhim Award' was presented with Rs one lakh in cash an idol of Bhim, a scroll, a blazer and tie or scarf.
Besides, presenting the Bhim Award, 10 outstanding players, who were honoured for their outstanding performance included boxers namely Sunil Kumar of Bhiwani district, Chhotu Lora of Hisar and wrestler Narender of Sonepat district. Each of them was awarded Rs one lakh in cash.
The two vollyball players each of whom was given Rs 61,000 in cash included Gurpreet Singh and Sube Singh of Panchkula. Another volleyball player of Panchkula, Sanjay Kumar was given Rs 51,000 in cash. The volleyball players are working in HSIDC. Kabaddi player Ramesh Kumar of Hisar district, judoka Parwinder of Faridabad district were given Rs 51,000 each.
Two wrestlers Anmol of Hisar district and Surender of district Sonepat were honoured with Rs 50,000 each. Col Satyapal Malik, VSM of Sonipat district was also honoured with Rs one lakh in cash for scaling Nanda Devi east, Annapurna, Kabru, Mana and Kamet peaks and bringing laurel to the state and the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor complimented the recipients of awards and also those who have qualified to represent the country at Olympics.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, speaking on the occasion reiterated the commitment of the state government to promote sports in a big way, saying that the shortage of coaches would be met with soon.
He said the budget for promotion of sports had been increased to about Rs 44 crore for the current financial year. Sports stadia were being constructed in 154 villages at a cost of Rs 50 crore and these would be ready by the year end.
Under this scheme, sports stadia would be constructed in a village of each block. A sports complex was being set up over an area of 83 acres in Rohtak. Hockey astroturf had been laid at Shahbad at a cost of Rs 35 lakh and it had also been laid at Gurgaon.
While introducing the recipients of Bhim Award, Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs, Kiran Choudhry said it was for the first time that a physically challenged sports person, Mr Girraj Singh of Faridabad would be honoured with Bhim Award.
She said that he had fought against all odds and his achievement had been a great inspiration for many others.
Ms Choudhry said it was for the first time in the history that the State won under-19 National Football Championship 2007-08.
Those present on the occasion included Haryana Education Minister Mange Ram Gupta, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister M L Tayal, Director General Police R S Dalal and family members and well wishers of award winners.
