Villuppuram, Jun 3 (UNI) Five people, including two women, were electrocuted to death and 31 others suffered burns, when a livewire snapped and fell on them while they were waiting in a queue to offer worship at a temple in Melmalaiyanur village in this district of Tamil Nadu this evening.
Police sources said the victims were waiting in the queue at the Goddess Angalamman temple to have a special 'darshan' on the occasion of the blue moon day, when the tragedy struck them.
Four of the deceased were identified as Ravi (45), Rani (50), Pachammal (45) and Murugan (25).
The injured, after being given first aid at the Gingee hospital, were later referred to the Puducherry Government Hospital.
Police said about 50,000 people have thronged the temple to mark the occasion.
District Collector Navneeth and Superintendent of Police Amalraj visited the temple and supervised the relief operations.
