Kapurthala, Jun 3 (UNI) The famous Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here has bagged the prestigious Golden Peacock Environment Management Award for its sustained efforts to conserve energy and its commitment for clean and green environment.
The award was received by General Manager, RCF S.K. Suri from Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden and Chairman of World Council for Corporate Governance UK, in the ''Global Convention of Climate Change'' held at Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) recently, an RCF release said here today.
The convention was organized by the World Environment Foundation and was inaugurated by Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.The award jury was chaired by Justice P.N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India and Member UN Human Rights Commission.
The RCF was chosen from among 230 organisations including big corporate houses of the country which had filed their nominations for Golden Peacock Awards.
The RCF had taken a number of steps to conserve energy including replacing 7000 tube lights and 5800 watts lamps with energy saving fittings and CFLs while the old AC plants had been replaced with new AC Plants operating with R-134a (Chloro-Fluoro Carbon free) refrigerant, the release said.
Solar energy was also being harnessed for certain applications.
Besides, manual timers had been replaced with astro-based digital timers for automatic switching on and off of street lights depending upon sunset and sun rise timings.
To recharge ground water, RCF had constructed 13 borewells and connected it with storm drainage system.
Effluent treatment plant was being used for treating 6900 KL of water per day, a part of which was recycled for use in non-drinking and non-bathing activities like watering of lawns and grounds.
Measures had also been taken to improve the design of RCF built coaches to make them environmental friendly by using Control Discharge toilet system to eliminate filth from the station area, it said.
RCF is already ISO 9001-2000 certified and was the first organisation in the country to obtain ISO-14001 certification for both workshop and township.
