Pudducherry boys and girls retain Junior Nationals

Chandigarh, Jun 3 (UNI) Pudducherry boys and girls maintained their supremacy as they retained the 21st Junior National Atya Patya Championship which concluded at St Joseph's School Complex here this evening.

Pudducherry defeated Karnataka 54-20, 66-10 in the girls final.

Girija, who was adjudged the best girl player of the tournament, gave an outstanding performance.

Maharashtra occupied the third position as they beat Manipur 17-14, 13-12 in a match to decide third and fourth positions.

Trailing by one set, Pudducherry staged a fine rally to snuff out the challenge of Manipur 11-17, 18-15, 18-14 in a closely fought boys final.

In the boys section, Karnataka recorded two straight-sets win 22-18, 24-14 in a classification match for the third and fourth places.

S Rahothaman of Pudducherry was declared the best boys' player of the Nationals.

Charanjit Singh Channi, MLA from Chamkor Sahib distributed the prizes.

Results: Girls (final): Pudducherry bt Karnataka 54-20, 66-10.

Third and fourth places: Maharashtra bt Manipur 17-14, 13-12.

Semi-finals: Karnataka bt Maharashtra 22-21, 21-19.

Quarter-finals: Pudducherry bt Tamil Nadu 10-8, 12-10; Maharashtra bt Uttaranchal 36-10, 32-10; Manipur bt AP 12-10, 20-18; Karnataka bt Delhi 10-15, 14-10.

Best player: Girija (Puddicherry).

Boys (final): Pudducherry bt Manipur 11-17, 18-15, 18-14.

Third and fourth places: Karnataka bt Maharashtra 22-19, 24-18.

Semi-finals: Pudducherry bt Maharashtra 15-12, 14-9; Manipur bt Karnataka 18-17, 15-17, 20-16.

Quarter-finals: Pudducherry bt AP 18-10, 18-13; Maharashtra bt Kerala 29-13, 37-16; Manipur bt UP 22-17, 16-13, Karnataka bt Uttrakhand 9-6, 11-9.
