Election for 8 RS seats on June 26

New Delhi, Jun 3 (UNI) Elections will be held on June 26 to fill eight vacancies in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, Mizoram, Bihar, Nagaland and West Bengal.

According to an Election Commission release issued here today, the notification will be issued on June 9. The last date for filing nominations is June 16. Scrutiny will take place the following day.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 19 and counting of votes will be taken up at 1700 hrs on June 26.

The election process should be completed by June 28.

The release said of the eight Rajya Sabha seats which will go to the polls, four are from Karnataka following the retirement of Mr Janardhan Poojary, Ms Prema Cariappa, Mr M V Rajashekaran and Dr Vijay Mallya.

From Mizoram, Mr Lalhmingliana is due for retirement on July 18.

In Bihar, Jai Narayan Prasad Nishad stands disqualified from March 26.

Mr T R Zeliang from Nagaland and Dr Barun Mukerjee from West Bengal resigned from the Upper House on March 24 and May 6 respectively.

Apart from this, the Commission will simultaneously be holding the biennial elections for seven seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council by MLAs and byelection to one seat of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council by MLAs, the release added.
