Woman commits suicide, 3 persons held

Mumbai, June 2 (UNI) A 30-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming poison at Jesal Park, Bhayander in neighbouring Thane district following the mental and physical torture of husband and in-laws for dowry.

Investigating officer L D'souza said here today that the deceased, Hema married Rakesh Pal (32) in the 2006 in Uttar Pradesh. Within a few days of marriage, Rakesh, her father-in-law Virendra and mother-in-law Vidya started harassing her and demanded a four-wheeler from her parents.

She consumed poison at her residence and died within few hours, Ms D'souza stated.

Hema's father Sachidanand Shahi, who came here from Uttar Pradesh, filed a complaint of dowry death against the trio with Mira Road police station last evening.

Mr Shahi stated in the complaint that at the time of marriage, he gave Rs 2 lakh in cash, Rs 41,000 to purchase a two-wheeler and jewellery worth Rs one lakh.

They will be produced in Thane District Court during the later part of the day, she added.
