Srinagar, June 2: Normal life here in the summer capital, was today thrown almost out of gear because of choas, confusion and traffic jams for hours due to restrictions on the movement of vehicles in some areas by the traffic department.
The traffic authorities had restricted traffic movement around the Sher-e-Kashmir park near here because of Lok Jan Shakti (LJS) party public meeting today.
Traffic movement from Radio Kashmir crossing to Poloview on Residency road remained suspended from 1030 hrs and no vehicle was allowed to enter the area.
The LJS president Ram Vilas Paswan, who was scheduled to address the public meeting at 1130 hrs arrived in the afternoon, forcing the authorities to continue with the traffic restriction.
A large number of police personnel and traffic officials were diverting traffic through other routes, leading to major traffic jams on busy Dalgate, Sonawar, Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Moulana Azad road and Regal chowk.
Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on these routes despite the traffic officials trying to regulate the traffic.
Passengers, who were boarded from Sonawar and Khanyar, had to deboard their vehicles at Dalgate after waiting for more than an hour.
''We cannot wait any more as about an hour has already been wasted due to traffic jam,'' said Aijaz Ahmad, a businessman, adding that the government should not allow any public meeting in the city.
He said now such traffic jams will be frequent because of general assembly elections to be held later this year. However, different political parties have already started holding public meetings disrupting normal life, he alleged.
