Chennai, Jun 2: Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today described the statement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, appealing for allowing the completion of the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP) saying it could be given another name, as ''unbecoming of the ruling DMK supremo who was holding responsible office.'' Addressing the press here, Dr Swamy, who announced he had been invited by an institute set up by the Chinese Union Cabinet to address a seminar on Sino-Indian relations from June 11 to 18 and criticised Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram for being responsible for rising inflation and prices, reiterated it was absurd on the part of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to suggest a new name for the project.''Why is he begging for the project?'' he asked.

Contrary to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's claim, the SSCP was neither economical nor bring about any economic development.

Dr Swamy said even the Supreme Court had directed the government to go back to the drawing board and consider alternative routes and an archaeological investigation must be carried out to determine if the Ram Setu could be declared an ancient momument and protected.

''All this will take at least five years and the SSCP has now become a dead letter,'' he alleged.

Recalling the incident in which Tamil Nadu Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna tried to influence the DVAC to help her relative embroiled in a corruption case and her subsequent resignation from the Cabinet, Dr Swamy, who released the 'evidence in the case' to the media here, also claimed he had similar evidence against several other Ministers.

''I will release them only after ensuring the protection of my sources,'' he added.
