Gandhinagar, June 2: Gujarat Irrigation Department will install a real-time flood control and warning system which will help make more effective coordination between various agencies dealing with the monsoon and its effects.
During the last two monsoons, Gujarat received more rainfall, resulting in floods in Surat, Vadodara, and Saurashtra. Sources in the department said that the system will collect data on water flow in the state and interstate rivers. It will help engineers gauge the scale of variation in the amount and time of floods across the state.
The flood control cell of the department began functioning yesterday in capital of the state. The engineers of the cell are devising a computer model that will facilitate information and movement, matching the flow of waters in the rivers, tributaries, distributaries, dams, and other smaller waterways in the catchment areas.
The cell has started collecting daily figures on the levels of dams and water flow at specific locations on the state's main rivers. The monitoring will be linked to the real-time control system to strengthen the data flow.
