Goa, Karnataka and Services enter Santosh Trophy quarterfinals

Srinagar, Jun 2 (UNI) Goa, Karnataka and Services today entered in the quarter-finals of the 62nd National football championship for the Santosh Trophy after defeating Railways, Haryana and Tamil Nadu respectively.

Hosts Jammu and Kashmir have already qualified for the quarter-finals while defending champions Punjab, Kerala, Maharashtra and Bengal, the four semi-finalists in the last edition of the Santosh Trophy, have been directly seeded into the quarter-finals.

In the first match of the day at Polo ground here, Karnataka beat Haryana 2-1.

Sanat Kumar scored in the early minutes to put Karnataka in the lead.

However, Haryana grabbed the equaliser in the 27th minute by a goal from Sandeep, as the teams were locked 1-1 going into the break.

Sanat Kumar completed his brace, heading in the all important winning goal to make it 2-1 in the 25th minute of the second half.

In another pre-quarter final match at the Science college Jammu, Services thrashed Tamilnadu 5-0.

Sahaji D'silva scored a hat-trick, two in the first half and third goal in second half.

Raleng and Narish also added to the score for Services.

In the last encounter at Polo ground here, Goa defeated Railways 4-3 in penalty shoot out.

Both the teams could not score in the stipulated time, as they got a number of chances to score.

John Dias of Goa and Pankaj Sura of Railways were excellent in holding the ball throughout the game.

The momentum of the match was high in the extra time of 30 minutes also as it went without finding a decider till the Tie-breaker.

Goa boys hold the nerves and the pressure well to strike four out of five kicks in to the goal post against three netted by Railways.

From Railways Amrinder Singh and Suraj Mandal missed their penalties, while Nipolas Rodrick missed one for the winners.
